It runs in my mind her sister was nine years old, and a girl friend 2 CONC , Mrs. Lane. I don't know her maiden name. They came with ox-team. There was a man and wom 2 CONC an that they came with. His wife was an invalid and he let them ride part time, if they woul 2 CONC d help take care of his wife. And when they got part way here, her sister took sick with cho 2 CONC lera and died. They had to dig a grave on the prairie and burry her. They gathered sticks a 2 CONC nd made a fire on top of the grave so the wolves wouldn't come and dig her up. 2 CONT 2 CONT One day Grama and Sister Lane went ahead of their company and they got lost 2 CONT from them. They went up over a mountain. It was raining and their skirts 2 CONT froze. They could hear the wolves and they could see lights way down in the 2 CONT valley. When they run, their skirts would rattle and they thought it was 2 CONT someone after them. It was late in the evening when they got to the village. 2 CONT It was at a blacksmith's place. The poeple took them in and gave them some dry clothes and s 2 CONC omething to eat and told them to stay there. It was very hard to make them understand, as th 2 CONC ey spoke in a different language, but they made them understand that their company would com 2 CONC e by there. It was a day and a half before they came, but the people were nice to them. The 2 CONC y rejoined their company and came to Salt Lake City. 2 CONT 2 CONT When they got there, the man that they came with was going to make them marry him so they wen 2 CONC t to Brigham Young and told him how it was, and he told them they did not have to marry him. 2 CONT 2 CONT Then Grama got a job working for Truman Angles in Salt Lake City and, I think, she worked the 2 CONC re until she married Grampa. Truman Angles was quite well to do and after Grama was marrie 2 CONC d they would give her food that they had left. 2 CONT 2 CONT They must have moved to Salt Lake City when Grampa worked on the tabernacle. Then they move 2 CONC d to Lehi, and later to Clarkston and then to Newton. 2 CONT 2 CONT I think Grama had nine children. College 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT ALMA PETER BENSON 1860 - 1918 2 CONT 2 CONT Alma Peter Benson was born 21 August 1860 at Lehi, Utah, the eldest son of a 2 CONT family of eight children born to Jens Peter Benson and Kirsten Ericksen Benson. 2 CONT 2 CONT At the age of eight years, Alma moved to Clarkston, Utah, with the family where 2 CONT they made their home for about seven years. 2 CONT 2 CONT While there his father, Jens Peter Benson, had some land and a small irrigated 2 CONT farm. With the early methods of farming the grain was cut with a cradle. His 2 CONT father would cut the grain and he and his brothers would rake and tie it in 2 CONT bundles. 2 CONT 2 CONT Alma also hauled wood from the hills back to Clarkston for fuel as there was no 2 CONT coal in those days. 2 CONT 2 CONT His father, being a carpenter, built many of the early houses in the community 2 CONT and he helped him with that when needed. He also hauled logs to the sawmill 2 CONT which was located in the northwest part of Newton to make into lumber. 2 CONT 2 CONT When he was about sixteen years of age, the family moved to Newton, Utah to make 2 CONT their home and as they were among the first settlers there, Alma helped with 2 CONT many of the early projects of the community such as building the old reservoir, 2 CONT hauling rock from the quarries, and logs from Logan Canyon to build houses. 2 CONT He assisted with the construction of the first meeting house in Newton and 2 CONT helped in building the railroads, at one time going to Montana to work on the 2 CONT railroad. He and his brothers Mark and John went to Park City to get ties for 2 CONT tracks. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was married 10 March 1885 to Annie Catherinne Ericksen. To this union was 2 CONT born eleven children, ten of whom reached the age of maturity. Their first 2 CONT home was in the northest part of Newton. Later, with help, he hauled the rock 2 CONT and built the home in which the family lived for many years. 2 CONT 2 CONT At the age of 46, he accepted a call to fulfill an L.D.S. mission to Denmark. 2 CONT This was a sacrifice at the time, as he had to leave his wife and nine 2 CONT children, and sell his farm, implements, and horses in order to go. However, 2 CONT in doing so he and his family were blessed. He filled an honorable mission and 2 CONT returned to his family safe and happy. 2 CONT 2 CONT While in the mission field, he kept a diary, which is rather interesting, as 2 CONT part of it is in rhyme. It is in the possession of daughter, Amy Richardson. 2 CONT Brother Rasmussen of Honeyville, a former mission companion to Alma, said that 2 CONT Alma was a savior to them when they were blue or despondent. He would cheer 2 CONT them up and make them forget their troubles and go on anew. 2 CONT 2 CONT About a year after returning from his mission, another child was born to them. 2 CONT They named her Amy Grace. He told me I was his "missionary gift". It was a 2 CONT sad day for me when, at the age of nine, my father passed away. 2 CONT 2 CONT He spent most of his later years working for the Utah Power and Light Company 2 CONT and was a guard in Bear River Canyon during the World War I. 2 CONT 2 CONT He passed away 13 December 1918 and was buried in the Newton Cemetery. Benson Barker, was born in Lehi, Utah 22 February 1863. 2 CONT Her second name was Martena, but she never liked it, so used the initial M. 2 CONT Her father Jens Peter Benson was born in Aaker, Bornholm, Denmark 26 April 2 CONT 1831, and came to Utah in 1853. Her mother, Kersten Ericksen, was born in 2 CONT Dokkedal, Denmark 23 February 1837, and was baptized in 1852. She pulled a 2 CONT handcart across the plains in 1857, the year Johnston's Army came to Utah, and 2 CONT the people of Salt Lake moved south. She went on to Lehi where her sister and 2 CONT husband, Mette Christina and Jens Peter Benson were living. They took her into 2 CONT their home and cared for her while she lay ill for weeks, after her exhausting 2 CONT journey, on foot, from Iowa City to the Valley. She became the plural wife of 2 CONT Peter Benson 12 September 1858. They made their home in Lehi until 1868, when 2 CONT they moved to Clarkston, Cache County. Four children were born to them in 2 CONT Lehi, Alma Peter in 1860, my mother, Christena 22 February 1863, Marcus Joseph 2 CONT in 1865, and Samuel in 1867. Their other children were born in Clarkston, 2 CONT Alice Marie in 1870, Isaac in 1872 and Rastus in 1875 who only lived eleven 2 CONT days. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mother was only five years old when they moved to Clarkston, but her 2 CONT grandmother Ericksen had already taught her to knit. The tiny stocking she 2 CONT thought was for a doll she some day hoped to have, her grandmother told her was 2 CONT for the cat. (The Ericksen grandparents crossed the plains in 1858, and made 2 CONT their home in Lehi, where they both lived to be 87 years of age.) 2 CONT 2 CONT One of the things she remembered they took with them to Clarkston was one of 2 CONT Johnston's Army cannon balls which they used to crush or grind the grain into 2 CONT coarse flour for bread. As in all pioneer communities, food was scarse, and my 2 CONT grandmother said the first year there, she did not know what it was to have 2 CONT enough to eat, she was always hungry. 2 CONT 2 CONT Indians were not too friendly, and gave them plenty of frights. One old chief 2 CONT used to come to their place and one day while mother was holding her little 2 CONT sister Alice, this Indian took the baby out of her arms, and no doubt would 2 CONT have stolen her had not Martha, one of the older girls of the first family, 2 CONT come into the room just then and snatched the baby away from him. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mother along with the other children used to help herd cows on the meadows 2 CONT south and east of Clarkston. She also remembered the severe winters and deep 2 CONT snow. 2 CONT 2 CONT One of the persons she remembered well was Martin Harris, one of the Three 2 CONT Witnesses to the Book of Mormon. He died in Clarkston in 1875. My 2 CONT grandfather, Peter Benson, was a carpenter and had a work bench in one end of 2 CONT the log room, and mother remembered watching him make the coffin. I do not 2 CONT know if she went to the funeral or not, but Aunt Alice remembered going to it. 2 CONT It was held in a log room and was very crowded, she said her mother held the 2 CONT baby and she had to stand or lean against her during the services. William B. 2 CONT Preston from Logan was one of the speakers, and she was very impressed by him, 2 CONT she thought him so good looking. 2 CONT 2 CONT While just a child in Lehi, mother picked up a small brown stone, which turned 2 CONT out to be a "peep stone". Once while they were living in Clarkston, 2 CONT grandfather went to Lehi, she located him on the return trip, figured out about 2 CONT the time he would reach Clarkston, and she and the other children walked out to 2 CONT meet and surprise him, and have a ride back into town. She never exploited 2 CONT this gift, not many knew about it, but she was asked, at times, to locate lost 2 CONT cattle. One time, a lady had some treasured lace curtins that were blown away 2 CONT in a storm, she promised mother a silk dress if she could locate them. They 2 CONT were lodged in a ditch just under the edge of a bridge, but she never got the 2 CONT dress or anything else for finding them. We children used to ask her what 2 CONT became of the stone, but all she ever said was that it got lost, and not until 2 CONT after her death did we learn how. Once when father was away from home, she 2 CONT told him something he did - not anything out of place, but he resented it, and 2 CONT in his anger threw it away, and spent the rest of his life regretting it. He 2 CONT was always bringing home odd rocks in hopes one would turn out to be another 2 CONT "peep stone". 2 CONT 2 CONT While they were living in Clarkston, mother had scarlet fever and was in bed 2 CONT for seven weeks. She had to learn to walk again. I do not know if it was 2 CONT this time or another when she was sick that she craved something sour. Lemons 2 CONT could not be had and she begged for some vinegar. She wanted it so bad, she 2 CONT felt like she would never get well without it. Her mother was afraid to let 2 CONT her have any, but one day, a neighor lady, Matilda Atkinson, gave her some and 2 CONT she started to get well from then on. She was grateful to that lady all her 2 CONT life. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1876, grandfather's first wife, Mette, died after the birth of her tenth 2 CONT child, he died too. Grandmother and family were moved to Newton to take over 2 CONT the care of the motherless family. 2 CONT 2 CONT In pioneer times, all shared in the tasks of homemaking. Mother learned to 2 CONT card wool, both for spinning and into batts for quilts. She did her share of 2 CONT the family spinning and knitting. She sewed clothing by hand including shirts 2 CONT for her brothers, braided straw and made hats. Washing was done on a wash 2 CONT board, and irons were heated on the stove. Their fuel was wood from the 2 CONT mountains, chopped by hand. Starch, soap and candles were also made in the 2 CONT home. Their good times came from parties, dancing and singing. 2 CONT 2 CONT Opportunities for schooling were limited, but mother attended school, when 2 CONT possible, and my father was her first school teacher. 2 CONT 2 CONT 3 April 1879, she was married in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City to John 2 CONT H. Barker, as his plural wife, and in September 1879, he also married Johanna 2 CONT Jensen of Weston, Idaho in the Endowment House. Mother's honeymoon was a trip 2 CONT to Lehi, to visit her grandmother and grandfather, whom she had not seen since 2 CONT leaving there in 1868. 2 CONT 2 CONT The log house on the farm north of town had two good sized rooms, so mother and 2 CONT Aunt Hanna each had one. They got along well together. 2 CONT 2 CONT 8 June 1880 mother's first child, a daughter, Alice Marinda was born. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1882, after the rail road had been built on up to Montana, father went up to 2 CONT Beaver Canyon (near Spencer, Idaho) to take care of the store for Samuel 2 CONT Roskelly, who had a saw mill up there. Mother went to run the boarding house 2 CONT and hotel, she had only one helper, a girl from Newton. 2 CONT 2 CONT That summer she said she learned to roll out a pie a minute. She had so much 2 CONT to do that she could not watch her litle girl as closely as she would like to 2 CONT have done, so she had a number of narrow escapes. 2 CONT 2 CONT One Saturday night she was not to be found, so mother went down to see if 2 CONT father had seen her. In the back of the store was a group of Indians, 2 CONT they had two year old Marinda up on the counter and were feeding her pine nuts. 2 CONT 2 CONT Another time her foot got caught in the rail road track, one of the men 2 CONT saw the train coming and got her away just in time. 2 CONT 2 CONT One day she climbed up on one of the big piles of logs that were ready for the 2 CONT mill, because of her red dress, they were able to spot her. 2 CONT 2 CONT Another time a herd of Texas long horn cattle were being driven through there. 2 CONT In the center of the road, playing in the dust or sand was the little girl, 2 CONT totally unaware of any danger. When the leader of the herd saw her, he 2 CONT stopped, pawed the dirt and bellowed; in that instant, one of the men had 2 CONT seen her and was racing for her, he was able to snatch her up. He lifted her 2 CONT high above his head, and the herd went on. Mother had seen the rescue, but was 2 CONT not close enough to have reached her in time. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the fall they returned to Utah. Father went to work for the Logan Branch 2 CONT of the Z.C.M.I. as shipping clerk. Their home was downn in the part of Logan 2 CONT that was called the "Island", south and east of the Temple. The Temple was 2 CONT being completed and mother spent much of her time helping there. The ladies 2 CONT cleaned, sewed strips of homemade carpet together, made curtains and helped at 2 CONT numerous jobs. She had to take Marinda with her and would put her down among 2 CONT the bronze oxen that supported the baptismal font, it made a good play pen. 2 CONT She was four years old when the temple was dedicated, a quiet child, small 2 CONT boned and fine featured and small for her age. Because mother had worked so 2 CONT faithfully there, and could not attend the dedication, unless she took her, she 2 CONT received special permission to take her with the promise that she would make no 2 CONT disturbance whatever. She made not a sound, and needless to say, was the only 2 CONT child at the dedication. 2 CONT 2 CONT In July 1885, mother's second child, a son was born, he was named Irvin Benson. 2 CONT The home in Logan had been sold, and she was then living back in the house on 2 CONT the farm at Newton. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mother often told us how she would walk to town to pick currants. Then with 2 CONT them, and a child in the little wagon, would walk back up to the farm, it was 2 CONT all up hill going home. One time, she said she was so tired she felt she just 2 CONT couldn't pull the wagon another step. She prayed for strength and her prayer 2 CONT was answered immediately, she said it was as though someone was pushing the 2 CONT load and all she had to do was guide the wagon. 2 CONT 2 CONT Those were troublesome times for the men that had more than one wife, and for 2 CONT the women. The United States marshalls were everywhere it seemed, and people 2 CONT lived in constant fear. Aunt Hanna, with her two boys, Henry and David, and 2 CONT mother with her little boy Irvin, went to Ogden where they were not known, or 2 CONT as it was spoken of then, "on the underground". Mother left her litle girl, 2 CONT Marinda, with grandmother Benson in Newton. They rented a log house in Five 2 CONT Points, as North Ogden was then called, and mother went to work as a hired girl 2 CONT in different homes to provide for them while Aunt Hanna took care of the three 2 CONT little boys. Mother would walk into Ogden in the morning and back at night most 2 CONT of the time. One of the families she worked for, and were so good to her, was 2 CONT named Hinchcliffe. 2 CONT 2 CONT One night, when her little boy, Irvin, was saying his prayers he said "Please 2 CONT God, send me some oranges." She didn't even know he knew what an orange was, 2 CONT and she could not afford to buy them. She told a friend of it, he took a 2 CONT dollar out of his picket and told her to buy oranges with every cent of it. 2 CONT Prayers are answered in many ways. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mother had left a big crock of currant preserves in Newton, and Birdie 2 CONT (Bessie), one of the girls of the first family, told me how well she 2 CONT remembered the morning father got it out of the cellar and opened it for them, 2 CONT and how good it was. 2 CONT 2 CONT Aunt Hanna and mother were getting along fine, when father came down in June 2 CONT 1888 with the news that Aunt Susan, his first wife, had died from diabetties. 2 CONT They had a family of nine children, three boys and six girls. The two oldest, 2 CONT John and Annie were married, the youngest was seven years old. He wanted one 2 CONT of them to go back with him to care for the family. They felt they were doing 2 CONT alright where they were, and preferred to stay in Ogden. Father started for 2 CONT home alone; but as soon as he left, the lady they rented from came over. When 2 CONT she heard the story, she told them they were not doing their duty, that as his 2 CONT wives, one of them should go to the motherless home. Tender hearted mother was 2 CONT conscience stricken and knew that she must go. Meanwhile, father had turned the 2 CONT team around and came back, said he was staying until one of them decided to go 2 CONT back with him. Mother had saved a few hard earned dollars, so they drove into 2 CONT Ogden and she spent it all at Wrights store for yard goods to take back with 2 CONT her. She found the little girls badly in need of clothing, the first thing she 2 CONT did was make underclothes and dresses for them. Their mother had been sick for 2 CONT a long time. 2 CONT 2 CONT Father's court trial on charges of polygamy was held 4 December 1888, but the 2 CONT first wife having died, they could not prosecute, and the case was dismissed. 2 CONT Father and mother had another marriage ceremony performed by Probate Judge, J.Z. 2 CONT Stewart, in Logan on 2 July 1888, making mother the legal wife in the eyes of 2 CONT the law. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mother's third child, George Isaac, was born 22 August 1890 in the home on the 2 CONT farm. 2 CONT 2 CONT About this time, the north part of the old rock house was being built or 2 CONT perhaps finished. Father's sister, Jennie, came from England when George was 2 CONT about six weeks old, she stayed in Newton a while, then went on to Salt Lake 2 CONT City. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mother's fourth child, Jesse Benson, was born 4 November 1892, Susie Myrtle, 6 2 CONT December 1894, Naomi Benson, 25 September 1897, Maud Benson 14 August 1899 2 CONT and Stephen Waldo, 3 December 1901, making a family of eight, four sons and 2 CONT four daughters. 2 CONT 2 CONT She nursed us through childhood illnesses, scarlet fever, measles, mumps, ear 2 CONT aches, colds and other upsets, there were no doctors near. 2 CONT 2 CONT How well I remember the good things she used to cook, roast beef and Yorkshire 2 CONT pudding, suet puddings and fruit cakes, the English roly-poly puddings, big 2 CONT crocks of preserves and chow-chow and mustard pickles, soup with Danish 2 CONT dumplings, Danish sweet soup, the long round loaves of bread, doughnuts, roast 2 CONT wild duck and dressing, English apple dumplings, honey candy and the big 2 CONT freezer of ice-cream for the 4th of July. 2 CONT 2 CONT I never remember mother being really well, for years she took heart pills. I 2 CONT dreaded to see her go to meeting, for nearly always, she was carried home. She 2 CONT would fight and gasp for breath, while folks rubbed her arms and legs to help 2 CONT keep her blood circulating. Then afterward, she would be too weak to speak 2 CONT above a whisper, and would be in bed a day or two. Then she found certain 2 CONT strychnine tablets would sometimes give her heart the needed stimulant to ward 2 CONT off an attack. I also remember the terrible headaches she would have. Yet 2 CONT during all these years and later too, there was seldom a week when we were 2 CONT alone. Father would bring church and political speakers home for meals, and 2 CONT show troupes and other travelers would stay at our place. 2 CONT 2 CONT Father's cherished dream of returning to England came true in 1909. He wanted 2 CONT to search for genealogy and fulfill a mission. He left in April and was 2 CONT assigned to the Bristol Conference, or District, a cold damp climate. He was 2 CONT 67 years old and not too strong. The food, much different than he was used to 2 CONT at home. His health failed and he returned in September, too weak and ill to 2 CONT walk alone. He was soon bedfast, gangrene developed in one of his legs and it 2 CONT was amputated in January at our home. He recovered from the operation, but 2 CONT was too weak to withstand an attack of pneumonia and passed away 27 February 2 CONT 1910. 2 CONT 2 CONT This was a long hard seige for mother - even with help, for he wanted her by 2 CONT his side constantly. My sister, Sue, who was in the eight grade in school, quit 2 CONT to stay home and help. Our half sister, Mary B. Arnn, left her family in Arbon, 2 CONT Idaho and spent several weeks helping care for father. Toward the end of his 2 CONT illness, mother never had a nights rest in 6 weeks. She was completely worn 2 CONT out and almost on the verge of collapse when he passed away. In the late 2 CONT spring, she went to Ogden and spent a week with Aunt Hanna, whom she had not 2 CONT seen in years, and thoroughly enjoyed the visit. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mother had many spiritual experiences in her life time. One I will relate. On 2 CONT the night of 29 August 1910, father came to her and told her to go tell 2 CONT "mother" (grandmother Benson) that he "had found a place for her." I will 2 CONT never forget how chalk white and weak she was that Sunday, but she went over to 2 CONT Grandmother's and delivered the message. Outwardly, grandmother brushed it 2 CONT aside, but on 28 September she had a stroke, and on 22 October she passed away, 2 CONT never having been able to speak a word. She was 73 years old, had passed 2 CONT through all the hardships of pioneer life, including pulling a handcart across 2 CONT the plains in 1857. She had a strong testimony of the gospel and always prayed 2 CONT aloud, she didn't just "say" her prayers, but it was just as if she was talking 2 CONT to the Lord face to face. 2 CONT 2 CONT Another sorrow came to us when Naomi, the sister just older than I, beacme ill. 2 CONT She was sick all winter, mother took her to Salt Lake to the best doctors 2 CONT available, when nothing could be done, they returned home and after weeks of 2 CONT suffering, she passed away 25 April 1914 (malignant sarcoma). She was sixteen 2 CONT years old, had an outstanding personality, was a talented singer and sang much 2 CONT in public, and was loved by all who knew her. 2 CONT 2 CONT We had a small flock of sheep, and after they were sheared, mother would wash 2 CONT the wool, then it was "picked" and she would card it into batts for quilts. 2 CONT She pieced and made quilts, knit our stockings when we were youngsters, also 2 CONT socks for the men folks, and made almost all of our dresses and other clothes. 2 CONT 2 CONT All were welcome in our home, she fed friend and stranger alike, no one ever 2 CONT left our home hungry. She was sweet and kind to all. 2 CONT 2 CONT About 1916, electricity came to Newton, and the town also put in a water 2 CONT system, so we had electric lights, electric iron and grill. We had a sink and 2 CONT cold water tap in the kitchen, later was added a hot water tank. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mother had her last heart spell about 1914, then started with gall stones, the 2 CONT spells became worse and more frequent as time passed. More than once, I was 2 CONT alone with her in the wee hours of the night through one of the terrifying 2 CONT ordeals, a tiny morphine pill the only medicine. 2 CONT 2 CONT About 1917, she had a slight stroke in her right side, and though in continual 2 CONT pain, she knit a number of sweaters for the Red Cross during World War I. 2 CONT 2 CONT The gall stone attacks were getting worse and worse; Dr. Campbell of Logan 2 CONT advised an operation. He took her to Salt Lake City and on 8 June 1918, Dr. 2 CONT Charles Mayo of the Mayo Brothers Clinic, performed the operation. He was 2 CONT serving in the Army and stationed at Fort Douglas at the time. When his orders 2 CONT came to leave, he removed the drainage tubes from her side, perhaps they should 2 CONT have remained longer, at any rate, the poison spread through her body and she 2 CONT passed away 21 June 1918 in the Holy Cross Hospital. 2 CONT 2 CONT Sue and I were in Salt Lake and spent the day at the hospital, going to Aunt 2 CONT Jennie's at night. I dreamed I saw her drive away with someone in a little 2 CONT black top buggy. I awoke and felt that I knew what it meant. We were very 2 CONT uneasy, got up at four o'clock and took the first street car up to the 2 CONT hospital. As we walked down the hall we could see the door was open and we 2 CONT knew before we reached the room that she was gone. 2 CONT 2 CONT Soon after her passing she was permitted to come to both Sue and I with a 2 CONT message that brought lasting comfort to both of us. 2 CONT 2 CONT She left seven children and twelve grandchildren. The two youngest of the 2 CONT family, Waldo, and I, were not married. She was only fifty five years old, but 2 CONT during those years, had experienced joy and happiness with family, loved ones 2 CONT and friends, and received many blessings. On the other hand, it seemed she had 2 CONT almost more than her share of sickness, sorrow, trials, and testings, but 2 CONT remained faithful to the end. His 2 CONT parents were converted to the church in Denmark and came to Utah with the 2 CONT pioneers. Kersten's sister, Mette, came earlier and was Peter Benson's second 2 CONT wife. They were living the law of polygamy and Kersten became his third wife. 2 CONT 2 CONT Issac's brothers and sisters are: Alma Peter, Christina Martena, Marcus 2 CONT Joseph, Samuel, Alice Marie, Rastus, and Jocob. He also had many half brothers 2 CONT and sisters from the other mariages of his father. His parents lived in Lehi, 2 CONT Utah for a while and then moved to Clarkston, Utah. In the spring of 1869, 2 CONT Issac's father was one of a group of men who decided to make a new settlement 2 CONT south and east of Clarkston. They called it Newton. He built a log house and 2 CONT shed for cattle and sheep and planted some grain and made irrigation ditches. 2 CONT In 1876, his father's wife, Mette, died at the brith of her tenth child. 2 CONT Issac's mother, Kersten, rasied Mette's children along with her own. 2 CONT 2 CONT Issac married Lucy Amanda Atkinson, daughter of Alfred Henry Atkinson and 2 CONT Johanna Mathilda Peterson, 21 December 1898. They lived in the rock family home 2 CONT with Issac's mother Kersten, after his father died. They had the following 2 CONT children: Lucy Devine, Clara Christine, Darcy Issac, Alfred Lynn and Ivan 2 CONT Jesse. 2 CONT 2 CONT Issac was a farmer in Newton. They were good, God fearing people and lived the 2 CONT gospel. June 1880, I am the oldest of my mother's family. 2 CONT 2 CONT Things I remember as a small child are, living in Logan and sitting in the high chair (my mot 2 CONC her taught me to sew carpet rags in the high chair); and standing on a table in Primary to si 2 CONC ng a song; and seeing a small child that had fallen into a canal, saved from drowning - an ol 2 CONC d lady rolled her. She was blue but her life was saved. 2 CONT 2 CONT I remember crossing Bear River in a small boat in Benson Ward with my parents 2 CONT to go from Newton to Logan. We moved to Newton and lived on the farm, north of town. My bro 2 CONC ther, Irvin, then 2 yrs old, and I tried to play Santa to ourselves, as we were told he would 2 CONC n't come, but we remembered what we put in our stockings in the morning. My little brother t 2 CONC hrew a small cup, hit me in the forehead, and I had a scar for years. We used to walk to New 2 CONC ton to pick fruit - red currants - and pull them back in a little wagon. 2 CONT 2 CONT Aunt Hannah Jensen Barker lived in the west part of the ranch house. She had two small boy 2 CONC s - Henry and David. Later, mother and Aunt Hannah went to Ogden to work, left me with my Gr 2 CONC andmother Benson for a few years. They cut my braids off. I tried to hide under the table 2 CONC . Most of my childhood was spent at Grandmother Benson's. I used to watch Grandfather Benso 2 CONC n plane lumber and play with the shavings in his carpenter shop - and how bad we felt when h 2 CONC e was sent to the Pen. Aunt Elmira had me on her lap in a rocking chair and was crying. (Gr 2 CONC andfather Benson was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment and $100.00 fine Friday, 23 Decembe 2 CONC r 1887, for polygamy). 2 CONT 2 CONT I watched grandmother card wool and spin yarn on a spinning wheel. I slept on a trundle be 2 CONC d under her bed. They taught me to crochet. I went to Charles England's school and visite 2 CONC d their home. They lived at Amos Clark's, across the street. Mrs. England taught me to mi 2 CONC x bread. They used to send me for mail to Peter Christensen's - over 4 blocks away, the las 2 CONC t house in the west part of town - as I would always hurry back. The Post Office was later m 2 CONC oved to Peter Jensen's nearby. 2 CONT 2 CONT I was baptized when I was 8 years old, in Bear River, the same time Aunt Alice and Uncle Neil 2 CONC s Jacobsen were, just before they were married. (It was the custom in those days for couple 2 CONC s to be re-baptized just prior to getting 2 CONT married.) 2 CONT 2 CONT I saw Grandfather Benson lying ill on his death bed and Grandmother sewing her black dress t 2 CONC o wear at his funeral and showing it to him. I remember seeing Aunt Susan, father's first wi 2 CONC fe, in her casket. Then my mother moved in the home to care for the family, which was a ver 2 CONC y hard task. Later, Father kept a small store in the front room and took me out of school t 2 CONC o clerk. I left school in 5th grade. I used to go home at recess, to wash breakfast dishes 2 CONC . I had a hard childhood, as my mother raised a family of eight and I, being oldest, had a v 2 CONC ery busy life. 2 CONT 2 CONT When I was about 12 years old, I spent one year with Aunt Jennie Stanford in Salt Lake. Wen 2 CONC t to school while there. My Aunt was a second mother to me and taught me many things, whic 2 CONC h I never forgot. I loved her dearly. Sometime later, I worked for a Mrs. Zink on South Mai 2 CONC n and later worked for Mrs. J.L. Franken, Colonel Weber's daughter, for $4.00 a week. I save 2 CONC d some money to send home to mother. I got my first nice dress and was so happy with it 2 CONC . I would always go to Aunt Jennie's on my days off. My sisters, Jennie and Birdie, helpe 2 CONC d mother when I was away, then I went home and Birdie went to stay with her married sisters. 2 CONT 2 CONT I could hardly decide which of three boy friends I wanted to marry. I finally decided on Joh 2 CONC n Hansen - at the age of 22. 3 December 1902, I was married in Logan Temple. Father went th 2 CONC rough with us. Mother had a nice reception for us. 2 CONT 2 CONT After, we moved to Salt Lake, we lived in part of Aunt Jennie's house while 2 CONT John learned the barber trade, then worked on street cars. Zola was born in 2 CONT Salt Lake. When she was two weeks old, we moved back to Newton (she was born 30 August 1904 2 CONC ) and lived in the Cooley home. The first year we lived there, 2 CONT in Newton, we bought a home next to my grandmother's home. My son, John 2 CONT Morgan, was born there 12 June 1911. 2 CONT 2 CONT After I was married, I worked in all organizations in the church, a member of 2 CONT the choir, relief society secretary, taught sunday school, mutual and relief 2 CONT society class. John's mother lived next door to us and was very good to me - 2 CONT always helping. She was a wonderful mother-in-law. Zola went to High School 2 CONT in Hyrum and married very young. After 20 years, we moved to Logan, lived there 3 years 2 CONC . I was a relief society teacher there and went out sewing and helping the sick. Then in th 2 CONC ree years we moved to Ogden, traded our farm for a large rooming house and lost it; bough 2 CONC t a smaller one, moved into it in 1936. Been active in relief society since moving into th 2 CONC e fifth Ward, in quilt making, keeping boarders and roomers to pay for my home. I have enjoy 2 CONC ed good health all my life. My husband died 10 November 1944. I am thankful I have a comfor 2 CONC table home in my declining years. I am 72 years old and living at 750 27th Street at Ogden 2 CONC , Utah. I am very thankful for my two children and dear brothers and sisters. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mother and Maggie Roskelley were very dear friends. They worked sewing 2 CONT homemade carpets together in Logan Temple. Mrs. Roskelley's little girl, Emma, and I were th 2 CONC e same age and we played around the font with the six bronzed oxen in. I was too young to remember it. 2 CONT 2 CONT I do remember, when living in Logan, of Father buying several pieces of gum to take to Newto 2 CONC n to Aunt Susan's family, and before going to bed, I opened 2 CONT every package and chewed it and put back in the paper. I sure got a scolding. And I remembe 2 CONC r how frightened mother got one night - sounded like a man was trying to break in the summe 2 CONC r shanty, but it was a horse broke the door and ate the wheat. 2 CONT 2 CONT Father used to take us in turns to Salt Lake Conferences and would always stay at Lovesey's 2 CONC , his old friends. He never missed the conferences of L.D.S. Church. Father had poor health 2 CONC . He used to drill artesian wells for people with a large derrick. He had ulcers and live 2 CONC d on buttermilk for six months. He thought that cured his bad stomach. He was a very stric 2 CONC t father. He would come and hunt us, if we stayed out too late. He would always bring politi 2 CONC cal speakers home, and Church speakers also, for mother to cook for. At one time, mother ha 2 CONC d 22 people to cook for. Traveling show people always stayed at our place. Mother had a ver 2 CONC y hard life but was always patient and helpful to all. She used to cut out factory garment 2 CONC s for Aunt Rachel and Uncle Peter and Uncle Sam, and was a good step-mother to the first fami 2 CONC ly. She was so kind to everyone in need. She had a hard life as a stepmother. I saw Mary k 2 CONC neel at her feet and ask forgiveness for unkind things and asking for help when she had her s 2 CONC on, Ed, mother took her in and nursed her and was kind and helpful to everyone. A better mot 2 CONC her never lived. She had the gift of seeing in a peep stone and could see things that happen 2 CONC ed. Father got so angry about things she saw he threw it away, and then wished he hadn't, a 2 CONC s he wanted her to see where the gold strike was in the mine he found in Clarkston mountains 2 CONC . She never found another she could see in.
